A session is one continuous conversation. CC GUI can open several tabs in the tool window, and you can detach a tab into its own window.

New session

Use any of these:
  • Click New session at the top of chat
  • Run the new-tab action
  • Send /clear, /new, or /reset in the input box
If the current session already has messages, you get a second confirmation by default. If a reply is still generating, the copy reminds you that a new session will interrupt the current chat. To skip the confirmation, turn off new-session confirmation in Settings → General → Behavior.

Tool-window tabs

Each tab is an independent session, with its own messages, provider, and mode. You can:
  • Create or rename a tab
  • Detach a tab into its own window
  • Close tabs you do not need

History

Click History at the top to open the history view. You can:
  • Search by title
  • Favorite / unfavorite
  • Edit a title inline
  • Export to a file
  • Delete one item or delete in bulk
  • Copy a session ID for bug reports
Click a history item to load it back into the chat view. Reopening history tries to restore the model from that time (and the agent, when known). History list

Auto titles

With Settings → Other → Auto-generate AI session titles on, a new session gets a short title after the first reply finishes. If it is off, your first message stays the title.

Session templates

There are two template actions: Use this for a starting prompt you reuse, a code-review checklist, or a release checklist. A template stores session settings, not the full chat transcript.

Rewind to a message

If a long chat goes off track, rewind from an assistant message:
  1. Click the rewind entry on that message
  2. Review the messages and files that will be affected
  3. Confirm whether to restore files at the same time
Rewind drops everything after that message and cannot be undone. If you only want to change the prompt and keep the current files, do not select restore files.
Rewind cannot be undone. Review the “will restore / will lose” list before you confirm.

History differences by runtime

Click a history item to load it back into the chat view. Unsupported sessions show a reason instead of a blank error.
